"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." 2 Corinthians 12:9

Spread the Word To End the Word

(This is re-posted from http://theweekesfamily.blogspot.com Please join us in stopping the R word. I dont think I could say it any better than Kelly does in her post today)

Today is the day. The day to Spread the Word to End the Word. The word I am talking about is retarded. It is actually a clinical term for referring to intelligence but it is often used as a hateful term. Every time someone uses that word to insult someone or something they are saying that if you are retarded you are less. Our precious daughter may very well be categorized as retarded. Are you saying that our baby is anything less than perfect? We don't think so. So think before you use this word in a playful or insulting way. Our language frames how we think about others and it is one of the most powerful tools we have.
Take the pledge with us to eliminate the r-word in everyday speech.

So leave a comment today and let us know that you have our Anna Kate's (and Noelle's) back and you will help us Spread the Word to end the Word

Here is a post from a fellow RTS mom. Her words are just perfect.
Thanks Terri

I don't talk about it much, as there are all sorts of assumptions about a mother's perspective floating around. Sometimes it's assumed I am speaking from a gaping wound I have, one caused by having a daughter who was born with mental retardation. Bitterness is often attributed.

I don't have any gaping wounds or bitterness. What I have for my daughter is pride, hope and respect. I have what every mother of every kid has, the desire for her child to find her place in the world and make the most of it. I want for her to know what fulfillment feels like.

But the misuse of a clinical term is a bit of an obstacle to this. As long as people choose to use the word as an insult, there will exist a misconception about the capabilities and value of people who are indeed affected by cognitive differences.

The usual counter to what is packaged into political correctness is to piffle at it - bah, it's just a word and it's my problem if I choose to be hurt by it. I am not actually hurt by it. Nor is my daughter. Hurt is not the right word. I am disappointed by the choice to use the word this way. If regular joe's think it's fine to say, then we are far from the society we can be, we profess to be: one that not only accepts differences, but celebrates them. We're just not there yet.

And this is not a freedom of speech issue - a rule that the word be erased from today's vernacular altogether is not what the campaign is about. We all know it's just a word. It's about rising and becoming a culture where people opt in to respecting those that are often either invisible or marginalized. Use the word all you want. Just keep it clinical and factual.

I know this - when the word retard or retarded is flung to amuse and insult(those of typical cognitive function, that is) simultaneously, I do know that it is not with direct, intended malice to my daughter or anyone intellectually diverse. The effort to encourage thought before throwing out this word to describe something less than desirable is not about the uprooting of purposefully bad intentions people have towards those with developmental disabilities, towards my child - I think those intentions rarely exist, if at all - it's about looking at the big picture to see the affects misuse of this word has on general acceptance and true inclusion (as opposed to just tolerance and/or patronization) of people like Addie. It's about awareness and mindfulness, really. Perpetuating the misdirected use of a word that describes part of who my daughter is stands in the way of my ultimate goal of ensuring she is a full citizen of the planet, contributing in meaningful and valuable ways.

A soapbox this is not. I am on the ground with everyone else. I too, have used this word in the past in just the ignorant ways this campaign is attempting to enlighten. A small chunk of awareness was bundled in with the packet from the geneticist containing our daughter's diagnosis a few years back. Bonus free gift.

Saturday morning Pancakes

This morning I made Pancakes for breakfast.

This was an experiment that I have wanted to try for a while and I must say they turned out really good and EVERYONE liked them.

Gluten Free pancakes

3 cups of oat flour (I used old fashion oats put one cup at a time in the blender
until it was flour. Zoey helped me with this part)
3 tablespoons of baking powder

2 tablespoons of sugar

2 eggs

and milk (I did not measure the milk just added till it was pancake consistency)

They seemed to cook faster then regular pancakes so keep a close eye on them. I burnt one batch.

They were great! Noelle's I separated before I added the milk and added water and her powder milk substitute to hers. You could also sub the milk for rice milk or soy if you cant have milk.

Back

I must apologize for the long break from the blog world. I had some computer problems and other things I have had to take care of.

New Year Resolution

I have been working on my New Year resolution it is, and yes I only have one this year, to keep the laundry and house clean. Like not do all the work on one day of the week but do it through out the week. I found that most of my stress stemmed from the house work so I decided that if I could reduce that stress it would be best for all involved.

How have i done so far? Well I think I have done well. Not great but right now there is only yesterdays laundry which will get washed and folded tomorrow with todays laundry, and kitchen and living room are clean.

I have been very happy with the results of this resolution.

The Kids
The kids are doing great! They have not been sick much this winter so I have been very thankful for that. They have been sick three times but not all at once, one will get something but no one else will so that has been nice to have short illnesses.

Noelle is doing really well, she is self feeding now, most things. Her Doctor G gave her a great report in January, he said she is growing well and developing at a steady rate that he is pleased with. Oh my Mommy heart likes to hear those wonderful word.

Cyann is GROWING. She is eating everything, crawling everywhere, and did I mention growing.

Zoey is growing up so fast, I must admit that three is a hard age. She and I don't see eye to eye very much so it has been very challenging for me. But God is working in both of our hearts.

Pregnancy
I am 23 weeks due June 18th. Still don't know what we are having but Jon is playing it safe and saying it is a girl but we don't know so You have to wait with us. :)
Doctor has put me on blood pressure meds to try and keep that down to an normal level this time. I am praying that will help the baby grow big and strong. Jon keeps telling me to be careful what I pray for I might end up with a hug baby but really I am scared that what happened with Cyann will happen again. I really don't want to do that again so a big and strong baby is my prayer.

Well I have a lot more to say but I will save that for another post so stay tune.

santa claus is coming to put stuff in our socks.... RUN!

THIS IS THAT JON JACKSON .COM
All her blog are belong to me.

Begin Blogpost..... Now.

So like a gaggle of fools, we drove down to bixby this afternoon around 5-ish - for tacos no less - and i guess hanging out with Dani's family was also on the agenda. i digress. on the way over, i realized i had exactly 0 things for Dani's stocking, and few things for the girls' stockings, enter dollar general. *15 minutes later* exit dollar general.
at this point the pelting ice turned into blinding snow. about 7 miles into the 9 - 10 mile trip, i could only see out of a envelope sized patch of the windshield - a fact which didn't concern me until someone pasted me on my right - see, i thought I was in the right hand lane. It was a this very moment that i realized the gravity of the situation, and my window portal was now the size of a baseball card.
I'm happy to report we made the remainder of the journey to the inlaws' house without further incident.

*blah blah, stuff happened, my brother in law left, and i was parked behind him so upon backing up, i got the car stuck in the snow which at this point was about drifted between 7 - 10 inches. 20 minutes later and with my... men in law....'s help the car was unstuck. so we figured why not wait a couple more hours till it gets good and deep, and that's just what we did. *blah blah more stuff*

so it came time to leave, and my brother in law Chris was going to go ahead of me to blaze the way... Well we spent the next 15 minutes getting him unstuck from the snow, and then got the kids in the car.... on the way home we did not get stuck (Praise the Lord) but we did however stop three times to play the good samaritan - but our assistance was not needed. Can i just say though, it was freakin cold out there! (thanks, i needed that)

so we got all the way to our driveway without any problem (Zoey was not so confident about the whole situation however) but anyway we got stuck about half way up the driveway. For the record we do NOT have much of an incline to our driveway. but that didn't stop my tires from getting well acquainted with certain parts of the snow and pavement. i tried several things to give me enough traction and even climbed over my picket fence at one point (with non-traction shoes, and a slippery fence, mid fence-strattle, the thought that i have no ability to pay for an emergency room visit, or even get to the emergency room for that matter - flashed into my head, but as you might guess, i didn't let that stop me.

There's a segway to the next point i'm working towards, but it's not g-rated, and Dani tells me that this is a family blog... maybe i'll twitter about it... maybe... anyway....

...and that's why i'll never trust in polyester again, but back to how i got the car up the driveway.

Ever have one of those moments? It's the moment when you think. "jon jackson, you've done it again!" Well this was just another one in a long line of such moments. It occured to me, i could hook up our water hose to the hot water end of the washing machine connection in the garage and stretch it out to where the car was stuck. it worked as they say "like a charm"... ho ho, how quaint.

but now to the real reason i started this post.
during this time while i was outside working with the car, Dani was inside putting the girls in bed. She was having some trouble with Zoey wanting to go to bed, she wasn't wanting to put on her pajammas, until Dani said the magic words "If you don't hurry up and go to sleep, then santa won't come and put special treats in your stocking."

At the risk of being sacrilegious, and I've seen the very hand of God move, and this was no less miraculous than that. She went right to bed and hasn't made a sound. and not only did she go right to bed, she RAN to bed and got under the covers, and promptly prayed that Santa Claus would have a safe trip.

this has been fun, and i must confess, i've grown quite fond of you over the course of this write, but it's time now for me to go, do my duty, i may not be wearing red, but at least i'm fat. HO HO HO Merry Christmas, now gimme that Chocolate. i sleep best stuffed with caffeine.
